Chapter Resources: Organizing a New Admittee Event

What is a New Admittee event?

New Admittee events are an excellent, easy and inexpensive way for chapters to reach out to new members of the bar and increase membership and participation at the chapter level.  A lunch or reception is a perfect way to welcome new members of the bar and introduce them to OWLS.

How can my chapter put on a New Admittee event?

The first step is to locate new admittees to the bar who live and work in your community.  The Oregon State Bar will provide a list of all new admittees by county of residence.  Also, canvas your chapter members to obtain information about new admittees at their firms or in their practice areas.

Here are additional some tips for putting on a great new admittee event:

  • Send electronic invitations to all new admittees to cut down on cost of paper invitations.
  • Advertise your event in the OWLS e-newsletter and any local bar publication.
  • Consider inviting an experienced member of the local bar to speak at the event.
  • Be sure to give the new admittees an overview of OWLS, including the benefits of membership on the state and chapter level.
  • Have the chapter pay for lunch for the new admittees.
  • Match up new admittees and existing chapter members for an informal mentoring meeting in the future over coffee or lunch.
