Chapter Resources: Presenting a CLE
There are several ways to host a CLE in your community.
Presenting your own original CLE program
Does your chapter want to obtain CLE credit for a program? Here are suggested steps for putting on your own CLE from scratch:
- Develop a CLE Plan. This will include a detailed summary of the subject matter and possible speakers.
- Describe CLE Plan to OSB MCLE Administrator (800-452-8260 ext. 315) and confirm your plan preliminarily appears appropriate for MCLE credit.
- Confirm and schedule speakers. Speakers must provide CLE materials to attendees.
- Draft Program Agenda with time schedule for presentations and provide speaker’s biographical information proving authority over subject-matter.
- Invite guests. At function, provide program agenda, CLE materials, and have all attending sign Attendance Sheet and include their OSB numbers.
- After your program, submit MCLE Form 2 to OSB MCLE department for approval within 30 days of the CLE. Form is available from OSB website or OSB Membership Directory. Include with form: (a) sponsor fee; (b) list of attendees and their OSB numbers; (c) agenda; (d) biographical information of speakers; (e) copy of CLE materials.
Using a previously-presented CLE
Was there an OSB- approved CLE program that members of your local OWLS Chapter could not attend? That video may be free for your chapter to borrow, depending on the section that sponsored the event. You could even get CLE credits for viewing it!
In addition, the OWLS Fall and Spring CLE videotapes/DVDs are available to chapters to borrow. Contact the OWLS office for a list of available videos.
Here are tips for putting on your own for-credit CLE using previously-presented materials:
- Confirm the CLE was taped, where the video/DVD is, and ask to borrow it to hold your own CLE.
- Contact OWLS or the bar section executive committee Chair which sponsored the CLE and confirm the CLE was taped. The executive committee chairpersons are listed under the “Section Information” link on the left-side of the OSB webpage. (Note: CLE credits are available for CLEs five years old or less.)
- Develop a CLE Plan.
- If you are replaying a tape of a previously approved program, obtain the Agenda and CLE materials provided at the original CLE and provide those to the attendees.
- If you are replaying a portion of the tape, you could schedule your own discussion that compliments the CLE and to round out any portion of time. For example, the OWLS Spring 2007 CLE Keynote Speaker replay was 55 minutes long. Schedule a panel discussion for 35 minutes to obtain 1.5 total MCLE credit hours.
- After your program, submit MCLE Form 2 (available on the Oregon State Barwebsite) to OSB MCLE department for approval within 30 days of the CLE. Form is available from OSB website or OSB Membership Directory. Include with form: (a) sponsor fee; (b) list of attendees and their OSB numbers; (c) agenda; (d) biographical information of speakers; (e) copy of CLE materials.
